One passenger, two of the crew, and two of the purser's staff died from exposure aboard. Thirty-eight were swept off or drowned in attempts to land. Captain Turner was the last to quit the wrecked steamer. Smith, the Marconi operator, got into communication with the. ship Hollondia five minutes after the Veronese struck, but, the engines being flooded, no further communication was possible. Henderson, the third officer, flag-sig-nalled throughout. Interviewed, he paid a tribute to Martin, the boatswain, who repeatedly risked his life to get a rocket line from the sea-swept (leeks. He added that the seaman Jay showed great courage, though injured. Chief-officer Hugo had tremendous difficulty in removing the third-class passengers from the flooded quarters, as they were paralysed with fright. Several were drowned. Turnbull, a passenger, said his five-year-old son was swept out of a lady's arms and drowned.
THE DEATH ROLL. Received 20, 11.35 p.m. London, January 20. Most of the Veronese's crew were saved by jumping overboard and being hauled aboard the lifeboats. The owners state that nine passsengers and four of the crew were drowned.
