BOROUGH COUNCIL.
VARIOUS ACTIVITIES. Various monthly reports will come up before the Borough Council this evening. ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMITTEE. The Electric Light Committee recommends That subject to the time,.for payment, of 7,1 per cent, of the value of the plant and material being altered from one week to two weeks from delivery at the Xew Plymouth Breakwater the terms of the contract with Messrs. Turnbuli and Jones for the .supply of the extra turbine and generator accessories be approved; that L. A. Marsh be informed that the council cannot see its way at present to entertain, his application for electric power at his farm on the Walwakaiho Road, but will reconsider his application when the extensions at present in haiid are completed; that the electrical engineer be instructed to report what price should ' be placed upon the two 45 K turbines and generators and whether it would be advisable to sell such plant in sections; that the electrical engineer be instructed to obtain quotations for a 300 KW,» transformer; that the electrical - engineer be instructed to expedite the erection of the electric light mains authorised and to engage such extra labor as may be necessary. AVORICS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee recommends:
That as requested by T 'tke Electric Light Committee the Borough Engineer submit . an estimate of the cost, of enlarging the waterworks tunnel at the Mangamahoe , , Stream, and also the cost of widening and putting a grating to the inlet to tire tunnel; that the action of his Worship ■ , the Mayor in arranging Mr. Fleetwood for the, termination of his engagement as clerk to the late St. sVubyn Town Board on payment of the sum -pf, £23 13s 8d be confirmed; that the tender of Messrs. T. and R. Parkin for the supply of 1300 cubic yards crushed metal be t . accepted; that Messrs, Niven and' C<h. ,' be notified that' the electric motor ar- \ t rived in a damaged condition, and' that '•' the cost of putting the same''in goodj order be deducted from their'' ac«ount: that in view of the circumstances the' "'•'■ application of Mr. S. J. Smith for, water supply at Rimu street be granted; that ' provided his property is within 100 yards - of the water main the application of Mr. S. J. Sutton for water supply a<t Elliott Road be granted;_ that the Botough Engineer be authorised-to lay the sewer in Devon street) from Morley street * to Outfield Road; that the report of the . Borough Engineer showing^th e amount of metal required for streefmaintenance for year ending March »,■ 1914, be- referred to the Estimates Committee; that the Borough Engineer be authorised to enter the borough horses in the Agricultural Show, and that any prize money received be paid to the chief carter. The following report-of an emergency meeting of the committee held on Janaury ■ 10 was confirmed: —(a) A ifour-incn water service was granted to the Taranaki Jockey Club on the following conditions: The Council supply pipes and fire plugs and execute the work. The Jockey Club to reimburse the sum of £225 and £2 extra for each fire plug.'Ser- < vices off the main to the Jockey Club ', buildings to be put in by the club at' ■ their own cost. The route to be along * Gover street, (b) The tender of Bellringer Gros., Limited, of £lO 17s per ton -, for pipes required was accepted (21 tons • half-inch thick Spigots and Faucets delivered at New Plymouth railway). Also resolved that Mr. J. McKay be paid a final payment of £164 lis 4d on his contract, Belt Road; that the Borough Engineer be authorised to bring Belt Road between the bridge and Gaine street to its proper levels; that consideration of Messrs. Russell and Son's request for compensation be deferred pending the re- . cei'pt of the report of the committee; that the overdraft of the late St. Aubyn • Board (approximately £313 ITs sd) be paid; that the Borough Engineer be in- ~ structed to submit estimates of the cost ~ of - erection of footbridges in Pendarves ' t street and Taranaki Lane; that the
electrical engineer be instructed to erect a coloured street light at the entrance leading to the public urinals at the' rear of the Town Hall; that' the Borough Engineer he authorised to extend the sewer in Fillis street; that the price for aluminium house numbers be (id each figure fixed; that the Borough Engineer - be authorised to construct a water trough at Devon street, Fitzroy. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER'S REPORT. The electrical engineer (Mr. H. Black) reports as follows:—Extension: On December 11th Mr. Climie inspected the Pipe Line and Forebay, and the next d a .T (Thursday) the temporary pipes , were removed, the screens fixed, and forebay and pipe line put into -regular » service. The new switchboard has been connected and the 200 K.W. set run daily for the past twq weeks. Some tests of new machines have yet to be taken. Seven men were employed at extensions and power house during the past month. Since my last report another consignment of poles has come to hand and these with a number of those previously received have been laid out ready for erection. Several small extensions have been carried out requiring twenty poles. Total connection to private lighting lines 1030. Three new street lamps have been fixed at Fitzroy and four in town. ENGINEER'S REPORT. In the course of his report the Borough Engineer (Mr; C. Skitrop) refers as follows to the loan work:--Streets: Molesworth street East—The formation of this street is progressing satisfactorily. Approximately 2300 cubic yards' . have boon put into the filling. Morley ■ street Culvert: The guard rails on this culvert are now completed. Gaine street: Approximately 1400 cubic yards of earth . have been carted from Vivian street and put into the filling. Sewers'.—King street: This sewer is now completed. King to Aubrey street: This sewer is ' just about completed, and will he ready for service in about two days. This wijl complete the sewer from Egmont street to Devon street, via Aubrey and Morley streets. Morley street: This sewer is now completed from Devon street to Young street. Waterworks.—The South Road eight-inch main is now being laid. The waterworks caretaker reports everything satisfactory at the filters, but has had some trouble in cleaning the asreens. ■"" ' ~
