UNITED SERVICE y^LAW. Law distinguished themselves in a negative sense on Saturday, contributing the small total of 26, the lowest score on. record in the Saturday competition. Service batted first, Perham and Bain opening, and when tie latter was dismissed first ball by Lash, and Osborne, who followed, was caught by.Elliot before he also had opened a scoring account, Law's stock rose considerably.. Perham: continued to the tune of §B,. being partnered for some time by Sumner, also 28. The big stand of the day Was made by Stewart and Sullivan, wh» made 40 and 6G respectively, while Jfac kay also climbed into double figures.,. The total score was 197. The rot sei in early with Law. Lash and Bewley opened, and were dismissed for 9 and 0 respectively. Bewley was given out 1.b.w., and Greatbatch succumbed to a fairly easy ball from Dinnis. The bottom seemed to be.knocked out of the team, an inglorious procession following. In fact, not one player ventured into the realm of double figures, and they were all out in a surprisingly short time for 26, including two extras. Law had a second innings, and when stumps were drawn they had eight wickets down for 95 runs. Detailed scores:—

ENGLISH UMPIRES DEFENDED. ' By Cable—Press Association—Copyright.-* Sydney, January 18. Gregory defends the English ' umpiring. Mistakes no doubt were made, but ; no worse than those in first-class cricket in Australia. The Bardsley and Minnett cases were very glaring, and were probably genuine mistakes. Umpires were not infallible, but from his experience they did not openlv make flagrant breaches of the rules! He thought the English umpires were quite fair. He knew of no remedy for the evils complained of.
