FUXDS FOR LIFE-SAVING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. A street collection in aid of the. Royal Life-saving Society for funds for extending the life-saving facilities at the seaside resorts near Christchurch. produced a total of nearly £3OO. The "Get-Rich-Quick Wallingford" Company i rendered material assistance in the collection of this sum, and received the thanks of the city from the Mayor at the Theatre to-night. TURAKIXA SHIPS A HEAVY SEA. Wellington, Last Night. Three days before the steamer Turakina, which arrived here on Friday night, reached Capetown she shipped a. very heavy sea.? and two ordinary seamen were so severely injured, including broken legs, that they had to be left at Capetown. PARENT'S ASTONISHING CLAIM. Christchurch, January 17. The court of directors of the Royal Humane Society met this afternoon. Case of Robert Davidson (30). for rescuing Grace Davidson ( four years), and also a boy from drowning at Woolston on October 31, 1012. The chairman stated that this was a case of a father rescuing his own children. The Rev. Elliot Chambers: Why shouldn't he? Mr. R. C. Bishop: We were certainly surprised to receive such an application, for a man could not do less than what he did. The chairman: The fact that he saved his children's lives should be his re- | ward. It was decided that no award could be made.
