SURF-BATHING FATALITY.

*m -- TWO LTVES LOST. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. A tragedy occurred at St. Clair yesterday afternoon, whereby two men lost their lives. The weather was very hot, and light rain showers occurred at intervals until well on in the afternoon, when a large number of people indulged in surf-bathing at St. Kilda and St. Clair, among those at the latter place being Joseph Clarke and Charles Wra. Tui'vey. Both men, who are believed to have been good swimmers, got into difficulties shortly after 4 p.m., owing, it is supposed, to the strong backwash. They were carried out some distance, and, though prompt assistance was rendered by the Life-saving Club, it was too late, as both were dead when, got out of the water. Efforts to resuscitate them were carried on for a long time, but without avail.

Clarke, who kept a boot shop in South Dunedin, was 43 years of age, and he leaves a widow and two children. Turvey, who was a commercial traveller, resided in Coughtrey street, St. Kilda. He was 28 years old, and also leaves a widow and two children, one aged four years and the other three. Another man got into difficulties at the same time, but managed to »'et ashore.
