THE TROUBLE WITH THE BOARD. By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. Adelaide, January 17. Clem Hill does not hold out hope of an amioable settlement of the trouble with the Board of Control. The displacement of Armstrong from the captaincy of the Victorian eleven did not look like a sign of reconciliation. A SUGGESTION' TO THE M.C.C. Sydney, January 17. Mr. Crouch, in reporting on the tour, commented on the umpiring. When the Board of Control requested the Marylebone Club to adopt the Australian method of selecting umpires for the triangular tests, the club replied that the i request arrived too late, but promised to consider it. There is reason to believe that in future test matches the umpires will be chosen on Australian ! methods. ENGLISH UMPIRES CRITICISED. Sydney, January 17. Mayne, a member of the last Australian eleven, hotly criticises English cricket umpires and the methods of j their selection. Umpires are appointed by the captains of county teams, and in the majority of cases are old professional cricketers, in the opinion of colonials they are disposed to favor home teams in order to keep in favor with those controlling appointments. Mayne declares that the umpiring in the test and county matches lias been inefficient for several seasons past, and a radical change is absolutely'necessary. He instances that Bardsley was given "run out" in the last test match. Warner and Ranjitsinhji admitted this was the worst decision ever seen. In the match against Fry's eleven at Bary, Ireland, Ilobbs walked clean in front of the stumps to a straight ball from Hazlitt, but the umpire said "In." A few overs later Hobbs completed his two thousand runs for the season in first-class cricket, and the umpire exclaimed "Bravo!" Bardsley, on another occasion, when Rhodes •was bowling round the wicket, tried to mow a half pitcher to leg, He missed, and was given out l.b.w. Mayne thinks incompetency is the cause, but many good judges on the other side say it is due to the methods of selection. SOUTH MELBOURNE v. CANTERBURY Christcliurch, Last Night. The return match between Canterbury and South Melbourne commenped at i Lancaster Park this afternoon, when the weather was perfect and the conditions all in favor of a good game. The fact that the previous match resulted in a close finish has added considerable interest to the present game. The South Melbourne team was the same that played here before, except that Pervis replaced Gray, whilst on the Canterbury side the places of Boxshall, Sims and Patrick are filled by Taylor, Patterson and Woods. The wicket was in splendid order, and the outfield fast. Melbourne batted first, and were all out for SO. Hickmott had his hand injured in stopping a hot one from McCormack, and he hail to retire, and will not be able to bat in the match. Canterbury, ir the first innings, made 191 for five wickets, J. L.
