HOW AFRICA AVON". GREAT CROWD AT RUGBY MATCH. London, January 5. The international Rugby match at Twickenham on Saturday, when South Africa beat England by two penalty goals and one try to one try, was attended by the largest crowd that has ever witnessed a game under this eodc in England. There were over 30,000 people present. The ground was dry, and the Englishmen were beaten by the weight and pace and goal-kicking abilities of their opponents. There were two outstanding incidents in the match. One was a brilliant piece of dribbling work bv Poulton. of England, who. starting from Ids own twenty-live yards line, got into the South African twenty-five. When about midfield G. Morkcl, the South African crack, tried to stop him by means of a Hying tackle, but Poulton swerved, and cleared the other man by inches only . When Poulton was 45 yards from the goal-line, with nobody between him and the posts, Mcllardy, South Africa's amateur champion sprinter, started after the Englishman, caught him up, collared him, and saved the situation. Later on Mellardy, who stands six feet three inches high, picked up Lowe, the speedy Cambridge University player, took the ball from him, and bolted for the line. One of the Africans, Luzt. was injured, and had to be carried off soon after the start of the su-ond spell. Despite this,bad .uck the Africans maintained the mastery. SOCCER. London. January 5. Another round of the English League SoeciT fool ball competition was concluded on .Saturday. . There were enormous eiowds on all grounds, and some brilliant and closely-contested games were witnessed. Bolton Wanderers played an excellent, game, and easily outclassed the powerful Woolwich combination to the tune of ."i goals to 1. The match between West, Bromwich Albion and Manchester United was brimful of exciting incidents from start to finisn. Both sides were evenly matched, and a draw was a popular finish.
