The Stratford Post reports that Mr. C. J. McKenzie, resident engineer at Stratford, will relieve Mr. F. Furkett, inspecting engineer, Wellington, who has been gianted nine months' holiday leave to visit England. Mr. Furkett is wellknown locally, having, seven or eight years ago, been stationed at Stratford. Mr. McKenzie takes up his new duties on April 1. At yesterday's meeting of the New Plymouth Harbor Board the resignation was accepted of the Harbormaster (Captain G. Holf,ord). Captain Holford has been in ill-health for some months past, which necessitated his relinquishing the post that he has filled so ably during his term of office. The Board expressed regret at the step he was taking and sympathised with him in his illness. General Sapuntsakis, who is commanding the Greek forces in Epirus, is said to have greater military .accomplishments than any other officer now serving in. the Balkan Peninsula. He has been at two military colleges, that of Evelpides, in Greece, and the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. After leaving Woolwich he was, for some years, military attache to the French Legation in Paris. Returning to Greece, he was appointed military tutor to the Crown Prince. He saw service, as long ago as 18G7, in the Cretan Revolution, and in the war of 1807 he was chief of the staff. He also represented his country at the Hague Conference in 1007, and his name has often been mentioned in connection with vacant diplomatic appointments. Mr. Albert Keith Smiley, who died last month at his winter residence, at Redlands, California, was one of the most public-spirited citizens in the United States. In 1809 he purchased the estate , of Lake Mokonk, in New York State, opened it as a public park, with fifty miles of walks, and built an hotel, where every autumn for the last thirty years he entertained upwards of 200 guests for four days to discuss the interests of the American Indian. Since 1194 he also annually entertained, each spring, over 300 guesta for four days, to talk over the problems of international peace and arbitration. In 188!) he purchased his Californian estate (Canon Crest Park), and turned it also into a public park, . besides presenting a public library to thecity of liedlands. Mr. Smiley was also a noted educationalist.
