DISTRICT NEWS.

j RAHOTU. j (From Our Own Correspondent). | A meeting of the sports committee was I held on the lit!) to receive the seereI tary's statements o£ accounts, when it j was found that a loss of £36 had been i made at the New Year's Day meeting ! through the rain coming on. It was deI cided to hold a plain and fancy Ureas ,1 ball on the 22nd February to try and rei cover the loss. . The milk supply at the factory is going down fast. The pay out on the 14th 1 for December was at the rate of Is per I lb, that being £193. The company are { going to pay out 13d for January .butierj fat. j I The Motor Transport Company held j their wind-up meeting in Mr. King's of- | fice, Rahotu, on the 14th, but only a few 1 shareholders turned up. Mr. M. FlemI ming presided. The secretary's state- ■ merit showed a debit balance of £1278, j plus the share capital, making a total | loss of £4OOO. The chairman said lie I was sorry the company had come to such a bad end, but was more sorry for I the unsecured creditors. It was moved by Mr. Green, and seconded by Mr. Morris, that the statement of accounts as read be adopted, and that Mr. Hugh Baily take charge of the works and hold them for five years. This was carried. A bazaar in aid of the Wesleyan ! Church Vestry was opened on the 15th,. Tjiiite a large number' attending. The Rev. Grifl'cn welcomed the visitors, especially the Rev, J. IT. White, and referred to his many good qualities. lie asked him as the first coast home mis-, sionary here to open the Vestry. Mr. White thanked the chairman for his kind remarks. Mr. Tlnghson then presented Mr. White with the key, and the Vestry was duly declared open. Afternoon tea was provided toy tho ladies, and the sale of work cpmmenced. j OKAU ROAD. j (From Our Own Correspondent). J 'The farmers' friend, rain, came down I in earnest on New Year's Day, and no J doubt has done a deal of good to some ) people, particularly the ones having land on the coast line. I noticed that several took advantage of the dry spell we had and set alight to their biisli, some having been felled for two years, and all, I believe, report good burns. This means a lot to the dairying community for next season —more grass and move cream to our factory. The Okau dairy factory, which is a new concern and commenced operations a month late in the season, has so far made 15 tons of butter, and no doubt will do as well as, if not better than, was | anticipated. This factory is run wholly on the home separator system and is the lirst of its kind in the. Taranaki district. Cream is being delivered some twelve miles one way and six another. What a boon this system of butter-making is to the backblock settler! If he had to depend on the running of a factory on the creamery syistem it would be impossible for him to get along. The butter is carted to Waitara. some 32 miles by I road, and under various drawbacks. The 1 grade received —from 01 to 93% —is, J think, very satisfactory, and no doubt this system of butter-making, under efficient management, has come to stay, and in few years I predict home separation and cheese. You may notice there are very few creameries being , built, the Inline separators taking their place. We have a daily coach service now both ways. 1 say good luck to Ml - . Jury (the proprietor), and he deserves our hearty encouragement, for no doubt, it will be a boon to this growing district. I!ut what about the road in the winter? I can pity the coach and its horses if it will be no better than it \\as last year. Why has not this important road between Taranaki and the Waikato not been metalled before this? Who is to blame? Is it the people themselves. or is if our member? Wake up. you people, and get a move on! What about approaching Mr. Massey oil this subject ?
