The day broke gloriously line for the opening of the Taranaki Association s annual championship and handicap tourna. in cut on the Vivian street courts yesterday morning. The greens were in splendid condition, and were never unoccupied. Throughout the day the courts ftnd pavilion were thronged with players, and in the afternoon there was a large r.L ten dance of the general public. The matches bearing 011 the final results of the various events have yet to lie played, but nevertheless play yesterday was of a very high order, and some interesting bouts were witnessed. The presence of Ollivier and other cracks stimulated interest considerably. The arrangements reflected considerable credit on the management. who. despite a late start, necessitated on account of the heavy dew. got oil 72 matches.
