The reply handed to the chief whip by Mr. Bonar Law states: "The memorial asks us (Lord Lansilowne and Mr. Bonar Law) to retain the leadership, while altering in one very important particular, not indeed the policy of Imperial preference, but the method by which it can most effectually be carried out. The modificatiou requested, of not imposing any such taxe, until ratified at a general election, does not .involve any principle preventing us from loyally supporting the desires of (he majoritv: nevertheless it would have been more agreeable to ourselves, and mo~ for the interest, of the party that the changed method -liould be accompanied by a change of leaders. The memorial, however. signed both by those desiring a modification and tho-e preferring that the method be not. changed.- declarethat a change or leadership would be fatal to the best interests of the party ami the country, and we feel, in view of -m-h expre-sion. that our duty is to comply with the rcqiic-r: and this we are pr. parni to do."
