About 4000 acres of bush in the Mokau district have been felled during the past few months, and bushmen have been reaping a fine harvest. The work is difficult and the life hard, but bushmen can and do earn very good money, as is shown by the fact that two of them went out'at Christmas with £250 between them. M. Fallieres, the French President, speaks of the Elysee, the residence of the Presidents, as a school of ingratitude. He has detected a remarkable dwindling in his visiting list as he conies to the end of his term of office, and since there are no more favors to come. He says: '•I am a setting sun. I belong to the past already." ' Two Italian youths had a quarrel in a street in Nice recently. One drew a revolver and the other fled. The one who had drawn the revolver chased him, but the refugee darted into a cafe. The infuriated assailant followed, and fired six shots at random. The people in the cafe were thrown into a panic, and dived for shelter under the chairs and tables. The landlord plnckily tackled the intruder, but was shot* dead, while several of the customers who were hiding under the tables were wounded. The murderer then decamped, but was immediately followed by the enraged customers and a large crowd which had been attracted by the shots. The man was caught, and the crowd was about to lynch him when the police arrived, and saved him from a summary fate.
