The New' South Wales bowlers who 'recently Mured the"old 'Country met the men pitted to represent the State at i the' Melbourne carnival. The latter had no difficulty, in scoring a win. At the J en'tertai'nnie'nt which followed the match j Mr. George Raffan gave ■an interesting address on the impressions formed by hintifrqm'lthe' tour., He stated that the :! ™fcsption"!tlfe' Australians had from bro-, .. tlvmr* botelersc'-kild generally left iioithlnf' | 1;o be'desired. ; A'more hearty;'WHeojue or better treatment was not possfbTe"., 'Mr. Raffan mentioned two rather pathetic incidents as coming : 'under ilk hot ice in Scotland. "A very fvne 'Scoltisli man and 'bowler, Mr. W. Critig, '"• visited the colonies a few years ag<i.' *;'l:Ie saw Mr. Whitehouse and myself (tien 'president of the New South Wales Bowling Association) and other prominent bowlers in reference to sending, a teani. Home, and was largely to; ] sponsible' for' the consummation of the scheme. He unfortunately fell ill, and died just before our visit. I had a, very touching note from him addressed to'mVse'if and Mr. Whitehouse, regret--1 ting 'that he would be unable to last long' enough to welcome us. I heard, also.; that; on' his deathbed he sent a sum of money to help pay for our entertainment." The other incident was: ''One of the Gala bowlers, who greatly interested himself in our visit, met with a very'severe bicycle accident, resulting in 'the amputation of one leg above the knee, a few'days before we arrived. He insisted" on being moved from his bed,, to the window to see us drive past. We puiled up, saw him at Ids window, I and' giiveh'im. three hearty cheers." IlereJs what Mr. Raffan had to say re straight bowls:—"We were very much surprised, at-the laxity of the Scottish Rqwling Association in regard to bias of bowls. There is professedly a standard, but it only amounts to having Taylor's No. 3 stamp on a bowl, and we all know here that that, means nothing. We met players, especially in Ayrshire, whose bowls were absolutely straight, yet no exception seemed to be taken. We indulged in pretty strong comment on the subject, and believe some action will be resorted to to remedy the oversight. The Association, have no testing appliances of their own. therefore we claim to be able to teach them something in this respect."
