The Manawatu Herald says that it is whispered' that Mr. J. G. Wilson is to be called to tho Upper House. An Ottawa cablegram states that the Duchess of Connaught's condition is unchanged, and her strength is maintained. Mr. W. E. Spencer, editor of the School Journal, and formerly chief inspector in the Taranaki Education Board district, is visiting Few Plymouth. Mr. John Robertson, M.P. for Otaki, is suffering from a nervous breakdown, and has been ordered a change by his medical adviser. He has left for the King Country, where he intends to pitch his tent at Eura, a little place about 3000 feet above sea level, and situated beyond Waimarino, where there is nd telegraph office.
Among the New Year honours not previously announced was a baronetcy conferred on Mr. J. K. Caird, jute 4 merchant. of Dundee. Sir J. K Caird has made many handsome contributions to deserving objects. He has presented large sums for the building of a cancer hospital, a maternity home, and a sanatorium for consumptives, it having been computed that during the last ten years he has donated £IOO,OOO to charities, ■'"tly associated with Dundee. About three years ago he gave £IO,OOO for thefurtherance of the freetrade movement, and a couple of months ago gave another £IO,OOO to the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
