MR. DEAKIN'S RETIREMENT.
NEWSPAPER EULOGIES. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received January 10, 12.20 a.m. London, January 9. The newspapers give prominence to Mr. Deakin's resignation. The Chronicle says that the Empire loses a forceful character, and one whose prestige was only second to Sir W. Laurier's. The Dai r ,y News says that the retiring politician terminates his political life as he began, plain Alfred Deakin. He is one of the very few colonial statesmen holding that titular honors from the Motherland are not a fitting reward 1 for public service in the newer States of the Empire The Morning Post says that Mr. Deakin is one of our race leaders. Sydney, January 0. The newspapers, in their tributes to Mr. Deakin's statesmanship, regret the causes of the retirement of so prominent a figure in Commonwealth politics. London, January !). The Times deeply regrets Mr. Deakin's retirement. Englishmen, it says, regard him as one of the 'leaders of the whole Imperial movement, whose vision ranged beyond his own dominion.
