The companies refuse the latter demand, but offer to make an increase in the price for sheep, which the men do not consider sufficient. The farmers are willing to man the hoards with their sons in case «f trouble. THE FIREMEN'S STRIKE. Dunedin. January 8. Some strenuous work was done by the officers, stewards and deck hands, who transferred from the Tarawera to the Moura in order to pot the latter vessel away this evening for northern porta. With the exception of two, all the firemen on the Tarawera were missing, and search for them proved unavailing. Efforts to induce the Tarawera's ex-fire-men to sign on were resujtloss, though one of them volunteered to work if he was paid £2 for the run to Lyttelton. About 9 p.m. Mr. Belcher, the secretary, declined to sign the men on the Moura, hut most of them booked passages by her to Lyttelton or Wellington. However, the fuil number of firemen (twelve) were secured, and the passengers joined the vessel, which was ready to sail at 7 p.m. The discovery was then made that four firemen of the Seamen's Union had arrived on the scene, and arrangements were made to get matters fixed up to allow- the Moura to get awav at noon to-morrow.
