It is rumoured that Mr. Deakin, leader of the Liberals in the Federal House, 'will shortly retire from politics, and Senator Millen is suggested as likely to be his successor. The rumours are, however, denied. MR. DEAKIN RESIGNS. JRe«eived January 8, 8.45 p.m. Melbourne, January 8. Mr, Deakin has resigned the leadership of the Liberals. He informed press interviewers that his resignation was solely due to ill-hea'ith. lie will completely retire from politics, after the forthcoming campaign in which lie will participate, particularly in connection with the referendum. During the past, couple of years he greatly felt itho strain of leadership. Mr. Fisher expresses profound regret at the causes of Mr. Deakin's retirement, and appreciation of the great services he lias rendered to Australia.
