Received January 8, 8.45 p.m. Sydney, January 8, The Cabinet lias commuted the death sentence on Egan for wounding with intent at Redfern to ten years' penal servitude. A cable message dated Sydney, September 25, says: —James Egan has Been arrested on a charge of shooting his wife, Ruth Egan, who had left him, Mrs. Maria Johnson (her sister), with whom Mrs. Egan had been living at Alexandria, and Charles Waite, who was boarii»g with them. Mrs. Egan was shot an the right breast, and her condition is serious. Mrs. Johnson was shot in the neck, and it is not likely that hpr. wound is dangerous. Waite had two wounds in the hip, and is likely to Recover.

Sydney, January 8.1 The death sentence on O'Grady for murdering his wife has been commuted to one of penal servitude for,, ljfe, on account of O'Grady's previous good character and the Judge's report that there was an element of provocation. j A Sydney cablegram dated November 5 says:—A tragedy is reported froim Annandale. Albert O'Grady, a motor mechanic, accused his wife of infidelity. Ho fjuarre'ded with his wife, "whom he left on Saturday, and returned: to-day. O'Grady desired a reconciliationj but his wife declined, and went to her Bedroom, where an infant was lying. O-'Grady followed and cut the throats oi both with a razor. He then surrendered t,o the .police. After his crime, O'Grady utilised a neighbour's telephone to ih" form the police. He stated that he had been maddened by his wife striking him with a poker during a quarrel.
