ATHLETICS.
RAIIOTU SPORTS. Steady rain which sei : n shortly after the start of the first e\ at of the Rahotu Sports on New ltat's Day, and continued throughout 'the day, made matters very unpleasant indeed for spectators, competitors and officials, and the events were got oil' under great difficulties. The arrangements necessarily suffered somewhat, but it speaks well for 'the management of the club, and particularly of the acting-secretary (Mr. T. E. Parsons) and the president (Mr. Car.dish) that matters went as smoothly as they did. There was good competition in all the chopping and cycling events, and finishes were close, ■although the wood varied considerably. The starting of Messrs S. Willoughby (cycling) and 11. Phillips (chopping) wa9 precise, events being got away to time, whilst the judging of Messrs J. Phillips, F. Ward and J. Phillips (chopping), who were ou an elevated stand, was received with satisfaction, save in the iirst heat of the President's Chop, in which some thought that Revel I had got a place, and also in the Local Chop. The cycling judge (Mr. Anglesea) was prompt and emphatic in his decisions. All the officials worked well. The depressing weather could not even dampen their enthusiasm. II Shewry won the two big chops. D. Pretty had bad luck with his timber, but won a sawing event. The numbering of the chopping men was a decided improvement, and might with advantage be enforced on -cyclists. The Opunake Brass Band, under Bandmaster Humphries, supplied a good programme until stress of weather put them out of action. Mr. Timnicliii'e, of Opnnnke, had charge of the catering.
