Rhodes telegraphed to Mr. Mil ward, manager in the Pacific for the Pacific Cable Board at Auckland, as follows:—''Please- accept my congratulations on the successful opening of your new cable, which will still further draw the bonds of uniting the southern dominions of the empire and 'help to bring them into closer association on points of material interests." The reply received from Mr. Mil ward was as follows:—"Much gratified at receipt of your message, and pleased to be able to report that the new cables have done excellent work to-day.
