ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
A DROWNING TRAGEDY. By Telegraph —Press Association. Gisborne, Tuesday. Arthur Karnes, aged 30, of Nfewenden, Kent, England, who came to New Zealand- seven years ago, was drowned at Waipiro Bay last evening. In company with a friend, named Oumiuings, Barnes was riding on the beach, having mounted a horse that had never previouly been ridden. The animal commenced bucking and made out to sea, ! rolling over in the deep surf. Cummings endeavored to rescue Barnes by swimming to Ms horse, hut Barnes' horse. plunged badly, and, though Cummings got hold of Barnes, he could not free him from the saddle. The settlers launched a boat and found the horse fifty yards outside the breakers, but no trace of Barnes, whose body was subsequently washed up on the beach.
A DROWNING FATALITY. Auckland, Last Night. A man named Wiieatley was drowned while bathing at Morrinsville yesterday. He was with two companions and suddenly disappeared. At a late hour the body was recovered. Deceased was a good swimmer and it is supposed that lie was seized with cramp. He was married, and leaves one child. He vat employed as a carpenter.
BURNED TO DEATH. Auckland, January 1. A retired sea captain, 70 years of age, named Thomas M'L-ean, was .burned to 'dwtth 1 in his cottage at Birkenhead early this morning. The firo destroyed the cottage, two stables and other structures, comprising pant of Verran and Son's hostelry yard. The damage is estimated at £2OO. The insurances are not available. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned.
