The Drake will depart for England and the Commonwealth eruiser Australia will replaee her as soon as possible. ; Tire Herald says some misapprehension apparently exists as to Auckland replacing Sydney as the Imperial base in the Souther/? I'aeitie. As a matter of fact, although such a change has been suggc-ted. no determination has been reached by the Admiralty as to making Aucklaiid'the new base. II is expected in naval circle- that if New Zealand elects not. to join the Commonwealth for na\.il defence the Dominion will have its own local fleet, hut Sydney will continue to maintain its present status and more as a naval base.
