The hatches of the Danish steamer Volomer were stove in, and she foundered on Christmas Day. A sailor going mad, jumped into the sea. The first boat was smashed alongside, and all the occupants were drowned. A second boat capsized, but the survivors righted it. The engineer died, iiiuL,ike chief officer went mad and attempted to throttle the captain, and then died. Fifteen perished.

A trawler bravely rescued the captain and a sailor from a swamped boat. The Volmer, when 25 miles southward of the Scillies, was .struck by a tremendous sea, which swept the vessel, ripping off the bulwarks. It poured in torrents into the holds and engineroom, and quenched the fires. The vessel was turned up tho Channel, and drifted five .hours before she sank. The survivors experienced a terrible thunderstorm all night. Two steamers passed without seeing the.boat, which was oarless and without fresh water. The men died one by one.
