MAIN SOUTH ROAD.
(To the Editor). Sir, —The Main South Road nearly all the way down the coast is breaking up very badly, <!uc to the fact t'hat the heavy traction engines drawing huge loads of produce are grinding up the metal to powder almost as soon as it is put on, to be scattered by the wind in the form of dust onto the surronding farms. The main road is now costing settlors at the rate of £2OO per mile for maintenance, and if the present heavy traffic continues that will be inadequate. The position cannot last. We settlers la the Egmont County are burdened now by a heavy rate, besides having to pay toll every time wo cross'the boundary line into anot tier County, land for what? A3 fast as we improve our 'roads?' they are destroyed. Of course, the solution of the position would bo a railway, which we are now agitating "for, but even if successful, it will be some time before it is an accomplished fact, awHiy then our roads will be completely destroyed. Meanwhile, it would be as well for the dairy companies to revert to the ■ old. horse teams, even if it costs a few more shillings per ton for carriage, as the increased damage to the roads makes the use of traction engines, even at decreased cost of carriage, a penny-wise and pound-foolish policy. Thanking you in anticipation.—l am, etc., EGMONT.
