ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
SUICIDE BY POISONING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Friday. James Ilenshilwood, a pattern-maker, was found dead on Christmas Eve at his residence, Salisbury avenue. A bottle of cyanide of potassium was found by the body. At the inquest, a verdict was returned that death was caused by taking cyanide of potassium. LADY'S SUDDEN' DEATH. Auckland, Friday. Mrs. Langton, a married woman, dropped'dead while walking to her home at Devonport. INJURED WHILE DIVING. Auckland. Friday. A native named Joseph W. U. Smith, whose parents reside in Gisborne. while diving oil' a boat struck the sand, injuring his spine. There is very little hope of his recovery. 1) ETE RMI NED SUICIDE. Dunedin, December 27. Fni(|uharso!i, a married man, aged 3."> years, shot himself 011 Saturday at Dunback. lie placed the muzzle of a breechloader in his mouth, discharging it with, a piece of string attached to his foot ami the trigger. PLUCKY RESCUE OF A GIRL. . . Auckland. Thursday. A waterside ' worker- nil in eel Robert Johnson sustained injuries to his ribs when rescuing a girl who- f.ell oil' thi; Devonport ferry wharf to-day, in (lie holiday rush. The girl missed her footing and fell into the harbor. Johnson dived in, and with the assistance of another man. brought her to safety. In doing so he must have collided with a pile supporting the wharf. When taken to the hospital it was found that .101111-' soil had several ribs fractured and a split knee.
SOUTH AFRICAN PENSIONER'S DEATH.
YYanganui, December 27. A man named Charles John Denny, aged about -12, met his death early this morning under sad ami strange circumstances. lie rented a room in a, boarding house in, Wilson street. Lately lie had been unwell, but refused advice to fro to the hospital, Last night, being probably in a high fever', lie had a bath, but his fellow boarders carried him back to bed. Later Dinny got out of bed' and walked off the verandah roof, sustaining injuries from which he died ill the .hospital. Denny served in the South African war, where he was wounded, and .for which he received a pension. . His body was very emaciated. .It is not known if he lias, any relatives in New Zealand. A letter from a brother in Paris was found among his effects., ' '' ■ FOUND DEAD. Dunedin. December 27. Investigations show practically 'beyond doubt that the body found near the Northern Cemetery yesterday is that of Charles B. Jarman, who was a clerk in the Government shipping office, ; and who disappeared on the 3rd inst. A handkerchief found on the body has the initials and the body corresponds exactly with that of Jarman so far as height, etc,, are concerned. When Jarman was last seen he was walking in. the direction of the Northern Cemetery. Some writing found in the clothes has been identified as that of the missing man. An inquest on the body was opened this morning before the above particulars came to light, but it was adjourned. PTOMAINE POISONING. Dunedin, December 27. Two children named Rutherford, a girl aged (>VL> years and a boy aged 5 years, residing in King Edward street, became seriously ill this morning, and had to lie removed to the hospital tonight suffering from ptomaine poisoning. There are slight hopes of their recovery, but their condition is very critical.
FOUND DROWNED. Clirislcluircli, December 27. The body of Jolin Clifford, an old age pensioner, was found in the Ilalswell river at O.IiO this morning. At the inquest Henry M'Elroy, a farmer, and Owen M'Oouglt, labourer, gave evidence that I hey had seen the deceased on Thursday evening. Jos. M'Guire said that- he found the body lying in the river at 0.30 on Friday morning. Owen M'Gough, sen., stated that there was a billy near the man's head. lie had evidently fallen in while getting water to make tea. The Coroner returned a verdict of accidental drowning.
