THE ELTHAM CARNIVAL
I AN Ot'T.STAAiJf.M; SUCCESS, i Tii:'.l lii.' i-:-:;)i;s;i.:o:! a' till' busmen's craft ;;i .given I),' s,i<.'].(' Hi' the finest exponents of the axemen's and sawyers' art in the Dominion—and what tine specimens many of them are—.still appeals •to lovers of clean sport, was evidenced by the immense gathering at Eltham yesterday, when the Eltliam Axemen's Carnival was opened. The takings at the gate, amounted''to £l3l 4s 9d, and though this shows a slight decrease on last year's figures, yet the actual at ; tendance must have been in excess, as far more members' tickets had been disposed off. The weather was glorious,' the sport was good, fields in the axemen's events were large and finishes close. Many whose names are household words 'in the chopping arena were ' again present, motably D. Pretty, S. Johnston, A. E. Sullivan and the Volzke Bros., whilst among the absentees were O'Rorke and Esau Pretty. Among a host of new men, Sullivan, who won the underhand chop, Harris, the maiden win'n'er, and Hope appear the most prominent. D. Pretty did not haj'e much success, and was justvible to get a place in the final of 'the 12-inch Championship Chop, which will be chopped off to-day. S. Johnson failed in this, but succeeded in annexing the 2ft Standing Championship, this being the most popular win of the day, and one that brought the genial vSaiii rounds of applause. A. E. Sullivan and redder annexed the Doublehanded Sawing Championship in the slow. 1 time of 2!) sec. Indeed, there were no record performances during the day, probably due to the fact that white pine used, .though , fairly even, was rather tough. W7 Weston won the Singlehanded Sawing Handicap from scratch. He is in fine form and should secure the championship in this class to-day, The cycling attracted good fields, though interest was spoilt an the two and five miles events by the number of spills, but fortunately none were serious, and Danielson had a field day, winning the half-mile and two-mile events, and dead-heating with Donald in the fivemile. Griffin scored in the first-class mile" Detailed arrangements had been made by the Officials and secretary (Mr. T. C. Stanner) so that everything was got off with the precision of clock work. The events were started to time by the starfceiyMr. A. G. Whiting, whilst the judging by Messrs. V. Spurdle, C. Cooper {and C. A. Wilkinson gave general satisfaction, which is not always customary at chopping carnivals. The handicapper (Mr. Hansen) as usual had gauged the merits of his fields well. A good programme of music by the Eltham Brass Band, under Conductor Beasley, and an excellent luncheon catered for by Mr. Foster were important features in contributing to general and individual enjoyment. Results were as follow:
