ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
A BICYCLE ACCIDENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Wednesday. A lad named Arthur Castle, 15 years of age, was riding down a hill beside the Northern Cemetery this afternoon when the machine got away. The "boy was thrown heavily and was taken to the hospital unconscious. His head was badly knocked about. He resides at Opoho. i ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Christchurch, Wednesday. A man named W. G. Hay, 37 years of age, residing at Sydenham, was admitted to the hospital at midnight on Tuesday, suffering from a wound in his throat which he had inflicted on himself I with a razor. While assistance was ' being got for him Hay attempted to drown himself in a bath. His condition is not considered serious. Hay is unmarried, and love troubles are said to have been his reason for attempting to take his own life. SUICIDE BY SHOOTING. ' Dunedin, Tuesday. The police received a wire from Owhaka to-day that John Maher, middleaged and married, a. laborer at Kahuika, committed suicide by shooting himself. A SQUALID DEATH. Auckland, December 20. Johanna Costello, aged 70, was found dead on the floor of an empty house which she had been permitted to occupy until a tenant was found. In the room she occupied the conditions were- indescribable for their squalor, whhh is remarkable as the woman ig reputed to be possessed oi means.
AN INEBRIATE'S PATE. Auckland, Last Night, William Moncrieli, aged 46, died in the hospital from hemorrhage of the brain this .morning. He was arrested in the street on Monday in a state of helpless intoxication. A JUMPING ACCIDENT. Gisborne, Last Night. George Campbell, a yoimg man about 2f> years of age,' was riding the horse Minnehaha in a leaping match at .Waeringaahi'ka sports to-day. The horse caught the top rail and fell, throwing the rider, who was seriously injured by conta.ct with the horse's lionfs. Campbell was into town, and is at present in a precarious condition. FOUND DEAD. Dunedin, Yesterday. The body of a man has been found ir. the bush near the Northern Cemetery this morning. It was in a decomposed state, and it was practically impossible to identify it. Lying alongside was a rifle which had a discharged cartridge in the barrel. There is no clue as to the victim's identity.
