The Christmas Day church services advertised in Salurday's issue for 8 and 11 o'clock at Holy Trinity Church Te Henui, have been altered to 7.30 and 10.30 respectively, A Gishorne Syndicate is understood to be considering the possibility of harnessing the Motu falls, and providing current for Motu and the various mills that extend towards Matawai.
At a special meeting of the Borough Council last night, the resolution was confirmed abolishing the ward system from and after April 15th next, and fixing twelve as the number of Councillors for the undivided borough. The Sports Ground Committee regret that it will be impossible for Mr. Lints to reproduce the "March of Flowers" at the spectacular display at the Recreation Grounds on Boxing Night. Father Christmas, however, will be in attendance and present every child with a toy. At last night's meeting of the Borou«h Council, the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne") Chairman of the Tisch Memorial Committee, formally handed over to the Borough Council the Tisch Memorial Avenue. He also intimated ttiat six seats had been promised, and would be placed m position early in the year. According to a Government veterinarian, the spread of tuberculosis in cattle in Taranaki is steadily on the increase, he having lately in different parts of the district found'it necessary io condemn numerous cattle. Farmers should seriously consider the matter of pasteurising their "skim," as it is they who must suffer considerably in the lon*™, It is recognised by all eminent authorities that treatment by pasteurisation will obviate the tendency to spread the disease.
The management of the Theatre Royal Pictures have secured a fine selection of films for the entertainment in aid of the [Hospital funds to-morrow (Christmas Night). The chief item is a three thousand foot film by the famous Vitagraph Company, "A Tale of Two Cities," adapted from the well-known book by Charles Diekene. The programme will also include another film depicting the funeral of General Booth. Amongst the scenic numbers will be a picture of "Jerusalem and Surroundings." A film of special interest is "The Miser's Christmas."
It is an opportunity too valuable for the district to lose," remarked the Mayor, at the Council meeting last night when a letter was read from the executive drawing attention to the Auckland Industrial and Mining Exhibition, which is to be held at Auckland in December of next year, and asking the co-operation of the Borough Council in securing an exhibit from Taranaki. The Mayor continuing, said that Taranaki with its butter, cheese ,timber and oil should certainly be represented. Councillors were fully in accord, and it was Tesolved to ask the Chamber of Commerce to take the initiative in calling a meeting iof all the bodies interested with a view to having Taranaki adequately represented at the Auckland exhibition.
Not the least interesting, and certainly the most attractive part of the proceedings in connection with the prize-giving ceremony at the Technical College on Friday .was the exhibition of work done by the students, and the afternoon tea dispensed at the conclusion of the speech-making. Particular interest attached to the lattev on account of the fact that all the edibles provided were all made on the premises by the students. All present voted it an excellent repast, the quality of the fare being quite in keeping with the standard set by professional caterers. The pupils of the cookery class do not specialise only in delicacies and tasty luxuries, but can cook a four-course dinner with the same good success as they turn out a batch of scones, a plum cake, or a plate of cream puffs. The aim of the school is to turn out all-round cooks, and instances are not wanting to prove that in this they have entirely succeeded. The exhibition of plumbing agreeably surprised many visitors from the point of view of its advanced nature and workmanlike finish. The samples of the handiwork of the pupils in the millinery class quite captivated the ladies present, while in the art sections the exhibition of work spoke volumes for the thoroughness and scope of instruction and the promise shown of rather exceptional ability in the case of some students. It is exhibitions of this nature that excite public interest and induce parents to enrol their children as pupils, and the only pity is that they are not more largely attended.
