SOUTH MELBOURNE v. MARLBOROUGH.
Blenheim, Saturday,
The match between a Marlborough eighteen and South Melbourne commenced to-day in fine weather. There was a fair attendance. Marlborough batted first and made a good opening with three wickets down for 118, but the tail, with the exception of three, went in a procession. The fielding of Melbourne was very keen, lots of runs being saved. The main scores were: Fearpoint 37, Jackson 28, Goulding 20, Norton 12, Wedde 10. Melbourne opened inauspiciously, Trott going without scoring. Sykes and Scott showed pretty cricket, but the latter spooned one to Ross and Giller was run out early. Keimey came in, and both batsmen made things lively, but did not like Benning's bowling and treated it with respect. Sykes (not out) 75, Scott 51, Kenny (not out) 26; total for three wickets, 188.
NEW PLYMOUTH v .LAW.
The New Plymouth-Law clash of arms on the Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon provided a most exciting finish, New Plymouth disposing of their opponents by two runs. New Plymouth went to the wickets first at about 2.30 o'clock, and made the respectable total of IUI runs, their last wicket falling about 5 o'clock. Arden and Gwillim opened, and runs came very slowly, both batsmen playing a very' careful game, Gwillim went particularly quiet. Arden, wheu he had reached double figures, was clean-bowled in endeavouring to drive Lash. Mason followed, and took some time L> settle down, most of his hits being '-uppish." When he had compiled 33 he was dismissed by Elliot. Monteath contributed a useful innings of 10, but W. Sliephard was not able to repeat his performance of the previous Saturday, being bowled by Elliot at a cost of only 4 runs. Harding joined Gwillim, and these two players carried the score on considerably. Harding, who played steadily throughout,., made' some good strokes on the leg. When he had sixteen to hi» credit he was clean-bowled by l Anderson. The remaining players did not stay long, and when Gwillim's score was DO, he was unfortunate in being bowled by Anderson, in endeavouring to snick a ball to leg, which hit his thigh and dropped on to his wicket, one bail being dislodged. It was hard luck that he did not achieve his century after having played an almost chanceless innings. In fact, only one of his strokes was, "uppish." When he was in the eighties he gave a difficult chance to Lash, at square-leg, off Greatbatch's bowling. When Law faced the task of making 1!)1 runs and only an hour and a hall in which to make them, it seemed that their innings would not be completed { that day. Lash and Bewloy opened as usual, and soon had the bowling at their niercy. With good strokes all round the wicket, the score mounted very quickly, Bdwley being especially punishing. Law's tally had increased to 00 within an hour, when Bewley was clean bowled by Gwillim. Greatbatch joined Lash, and these two players continued to force the pace Finally. Lash returned a soft catch to Mason, which was accepted. Laurie followed, but soon lost his wicket, and Elliot also failed to score. When If. B.' Reid commenced to keep company with I Greatbatch, the latter was clean-bowled
by Mason for 40 (including 5 fours ami one six). The score had now reached 150, but the remaining batsmen coiili; not withstand the bowling of Mason, ami Gwiliim. i'<y a lucky snick or two, a f.nv byes, and a couple of good hits by Johnson, tlis score, however, gradually : approached New Plymouth's total. Johnson was sooi disposed-.of, however, and it was thought that the game was won by New Plymouth. R. B. Reid, however, opened his shoulders and made some pretty hits off Gwiliim, and, brought the score still nearer the required total. Rcid, however, had no staying power, and Anderson and Shepherd, although they made Law's figure climb to within two ,of New Plymouth's tally, were unable to win the match. Monk took lour good catche3 at midoff, at which position he is improving ,with every match. Detailed scores: ; NEW PLYMOUTH—Iet Innings.
