WHITE SLAVERY.

WORK DONE BY A CHILD. Chrißtchurch, .Dpcember 18. Caustic comments were made by Dr. C. J. Russell regarding the work done by a child in Kaikoura before attending . school each morning. The subject was introduced into the meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board to-day by the receipt of a letter from the head teacher of the Kaikoura suburban school quoting the case of a girl who had attended school for I six years without a single half day's absence. The letter went on: "She lias to. walk a distance of four miles, and, while the season is on, milks, five'cows morning and night, and in addition frequently takes the milk to the factory, then attends school." The head teacher suggested that the Board should specially commend ( ttie girl. Dr. C. J. Russell characterised this ' affair as a piece of white slavery. The - whole affair was scandalous, he aaifl: and the parents should- he prosecuted for the in which they - had worked the girl. ' 1

Mr. T. W. Adams said that the girl had not come to any harm. It took a lot of work of that sort to hurt girls and boys, and he life on a farm like that would ensure that a woman would be a good housekeeper. It was decided to present a framed certificate to the girl, commending her for her faithful attendance. '

■ Dr. Russell: But making no mention of the cows. ' ■ : '
