SHIPPING ACCIDENTS.
STEAMER ASHORE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, Thursday. The steamer John, 339 tons, o.wned by Captain Hull, of Wellington, and sailing under Captain Helm, rail ashore at the mouth of the Tukituki River, 10 miles south of Napier during the night. She was on her way from Gisborne to Wellington, having left Poverty Bay at 1.15 p.m. yesterday with GO bales of wool. The Tarigaroa lias been despatched to render assistance. Details are meagre but the crew are all safe. The sea is very calm. Later. The steamer was re-floated at 10 o'clock, THE STRANDING OF THE WEKA. Napier, Thursday. A- magisterial inquiry into the stranding of the Weka at Porangahau last October was held before Mr. McCarthy, S.M., and. Captains Post and Petersen (assessors). The evidence went to show that the weather was hazy, and that the seamen on-duty failed to detect land or hear the breakers till Dhc vessel bump* ed. Skipper Tiarrelsen had been on duty practically the whole -of the previous day. and was just about to go below when the mis'hap occurred. The Court will give its decision this afternoon.
