THEATRE ROYAL PICTURES.
A special selection of pictures will be shown at the entertainment for the Swimming Club this evening, amongst the special items being "The Diver," "New Year Amusements, Singapore," "Swimming by Miss Lily Smith," and an "Exhibition of Fancy Swimming and Diving" by Miss Sadie, the world's premier lady diver. To-morrow night the management will introduce a complete new programme, and draw public attention to the fact that this selection will be screened on Tuesday night only, and there will be no pictures shown either Wednesday or Thursday nights. EMPIRE THEATRE. A large audience greeted the bi-weekly change of programme at the Empire Theatre oil Saturday night. The bill-of-fare was noted for the range of items and variety of subjects. "The Lake of Dreams." a Selig special, was a delightfully picturesque and subtlety sentimental light drama, with an ending of I the happiest description and a moral | happily conceived and gently brought home to tin® audience. The lake scenes in the piece were charming. An exciting and clever Cines photo-play told "How Raffles Escaped." The film was a detective subject of the first water. The Apennine mountains was the romantic setting in a Kalem feature drama, "The Orgari-Grinder," while in "Broncho Billy's Bible," those present were treated to a typically Western film, full of stirring realisms. On the scenic side, the scenes in Korea were at once interesting and educative. By dint of excellent photography the film initiated many into manners and' customs of this now subjected people, and street scenes being esepcially good. Nothing could exceed the superb beauty of some of the scenery disclosed in another picture. "The Valley of the Salzaeh," while in a different vein came a "Study in Crayfish." One never knew before that "cravs" were such interesting creatures. The latest Gaumont Graphic was also shown, "A Man Under the Red," and "The Silent System" aro worthy of special mention. •IANSEX. The performance of Jansen must he seen to be appreciated. Next Thursday, the 10th inst., lie will pay a return visit to New Plymouth, "and will appear in the Theatre Royal, supported by an entirely new company. .Tans,en's illusions wijl all be new, and it is claimed that these will send the audience home infused wlith one hundred per cent, more bowilijernicnt than any other previous performances have done. .Tansen was such a success when he last appeared here tihat doubtless he will attract ,a v l;irge audience indeed. lie will' present ■ a varied programme to please everybody. .Tansen is a performer whp- captivates by his mysteriousness. |she world loves to be mystified;land'mystery attracts ;the voung, the old, the grace and the {jay.
