Florence Seymour recanted the statements that her lover was wearing a Trilby hat. The incidents on the beach took place on the eighth, not on the ninth. She made the statements because the detectives threatened to accuse her of the murder. Williams' brother testified that accused indignantly repudiates the crime, and said he had' an idea that the gang who did it was afraid of being suspected owing <to his association with the,gang.

On October 22 a cablegram staled:— "John Williams Ims been remanded at Eastbourne on a charge of murdering Inspector Walls, at Countess Sztaray s liou.-e. a fortnight ago. when the inspector was summoned to the house to arrest burglars. The evidence is based oi: tin* discovery of a hat alleged to belong to Willhuns, also a revolver In: was seen to burv 011 the beach, and also his flight to London. The chief witness is Florence Seymour, with whom Williams cohabited. She testified that on the night of the tragedy she carried a parcel containing a rope with a hook. Williams left lie'r for half an hour, and when he returned he was hatlcss. He bade her throw the parcel on the beach."
