r From Our Resident Reporter. THE CADETS. The Senior Cadets turned out in their 1 new uniforms on Thursday night. Some of the boys must have been eager to get away when the uniforms were distributed, and .some got suits too roomy for them. 'The uniform is a neat one, the same as was worn by the New Zealand contingent of cadets which toured Canada. The tunics are well cut, and most of the lads drew a prize in the matter of fit. Any tendency to bigness in those loose knickerbockers made them seem absurdly large, but there was no excuse for those addlepatcd■ .youths and others who "threw oil" at the boys. Ridicule will not make the boys keen about going to parade. If self-respect-ing citizens would take up another matter which is not conducive to the morale of the lads they would do a certain individual, the Cadets, and the country a service. Xow, guess! A STRATFORD "OLD BOY." Mr. J. L. Robinson, M.A.. son of Mr. R. JI. Robinson, of Stratford, is-, visiting his home. Mr. Robinson lias been a success right throughout his university course, and is marked out for big things in the church of his adoption. He has just completed his course at Knox College, Dunedin, and passed his finaL with first-class honors. Latterly he has acted as assistant minister at First Church, Dunedin, and has made excellent use of a fine opportunity. As showing how his work is appreciated there, it is only necessary to state that after his ordination, which takes place at either Hawera or Stratford during next week, Mr. Robinson will take up a three years' appointment in that charge.
DOMAIN BOARD SCRAPS The Domain Board's term of office expires in April next. The Board yesterday discussed informally the chances of reappointment versus municipal control. The general opinion was that a nominated board was the better, as it gave continuity of direction and control to men willing to give their time, while borough councils were always changing about, and it might chance that a council would bo elected without including a single man interested in parks or recreation grounds. It is doubtful if any borough council could have done better than the Board has done with the tiny sum at its disposal. The Mayor told the Domain Board yesterday that he would see that within a week the long-promised path to King Kdward Park from Broadway would be made. It is not before its time. The present means of access, or rather, want of access, is a disgrace to the community. The Fire Brigade men are not to be debarred from putting down a practice plug and track in Victoria Park. The Domain Board reckons there's plenty of room for the Brigade and the tennis clubs, too. "Has anyone heard anything of the Beautifying Society?" Mr. T. H. Penn asked the chairman of the Domain Board yesterday. The Mayor had. As the planting season was over the Society v»as resting, he explained, but it would be heard of again in clue season. STRAY PARAGRAPHS
The Xcws fine weather chronicle was missed on Saturday. For the benefit of Stratfordites, who do not know it, let it be stated that Friday was the ninth fine day in succession. At time of writing the sky is clouded, but an old weather sage predicts that ''it's just for heat!" The School Committee is making a brisk canvass for contributions to the school prize fund. The loose cash is raining in splendidly. Broadway pays, of course! The only thing which relieved the dull monotony of the S.M. Court .yesterday was tin* clerk's insistence upon Mr. W. D. Anderson handing him the necessary stamps due in fees on a judgment by default. The clerk was acting within his right, and, after Mr. Anderson had protested, and the S.M. had upheld the clerk, he said he had been inconvenienceM by Mr. Anderson not paying up prompt' ly, a statement which Mr. Anderson de nied. As the ■bailiff may not sell stamps. and the clerk insists on having the fce( paid in stamps, and not in cash, it will be necessary in future, apparently, fot solicitors to carry a book of stamps with them, or have a clerk and stamps in waiting. Having aired the grievance, Mr. Reeve offered "tick," but Mr. Anderson would not accept it. Hitherto the practice has been for the solicitors to send Aown the necessary stamps at the conclusion of the Court sitting, and this practice worked smoothly. There is talk of a fine new building in Broadway. In the S.M. Court yesterday Percy W. Willson was further remanded for a wee.k on a charge of forging and uttering, and was again released on bail. Tue Magistrate finds he cannot arrange his work so as to allow him to give a day to the hearing of the ease, and the hearing will probably come on before a , bench of Justices on the 23rd inst. Young & Co., pill offer a good yarding of young cattle, |c, at the Stratford yards to-morrow. I BERNARD'S PICTURES E. bumper programme is drawing bumB houses. Warm nights make no dilTer■e. for there is no discomfort to pic-F'e-goers in this splendidly ventilated [libliug. The Melbourne Cup, 1012. is' lie of the big attractions, but dramas, :enics and comics of rare merit abound, light and amusing drama is screened in The Pugilist and the Girl," which conprns chiefly a lovels' quarrel and the [alousy of the rejected swain. The granger, who is responsible for the Jbuble, is plotted against, and a boxing match is one of the mearis "used to persuade him to depart elsewhere. He is, however, a champion with the gloves. and the evening receives some big surprises. The latest fiaumont Graphic sustains the reputation these popular pictures have for originality and general excellence. "Picturesque Cuba" is the chief scenic film, presenting beautiful tropical scenery.
