SWIMMING.

CARNIVAL AT NAPIER. By Telegraph—Press' Association. Napier, Friday. The swimming carnival arranged in connection with the visit of the Australian team, Solomons, Hay and Riddington, was held in the Municipal Baths last evening under most favourable conditions. Solomons swam exceptionally well, and put up two now records for New Zealand. Fifty yard* were covered in .25 l-ssec, the previous record being Fordham's 27sec. One hundred yards were traversed in 60 2-ssec. the previous best .being Cavill's Glnee, and Champion's 03 2-osee. The visitors left by the mail train for Wellington en route for Christchurch.

The Melbourne Swimming Club is moving in the matter of the whitewashing of professional swimmer Beaurepaire. The Victorian Amateur Swimming Association has been approached on the subject, and was complacent enough to allow the matter to stand over, "pending receipt of the report of the delegates to the International Swimming Federation." Why? asks an Austrian scribe. In what way can that report affect the position'; Beaurepaire is a professional, if ever there was one, according to the definition, laid down aud accepted everywhere. Much as we all would like to see such a great performer as "Bogey" again competing among what a speaker at a recent gathering of aquatic athletes termed the "lillywhites of the game," we could not tolerate so glaring a transgression as bringing him back to the fold, knowing that he would continue to sin against one of our most inexorable laws, If Beaurepaire intended entering some other walk of life as an occupation, his case might be given favorable consideration, but a paid swimming instructor! Well, it's strong, to say the least of it. Is there no finality to such movements? Wasn't the thing dealt with last session, and thrown out? Fancy Arthur Scott, Geoff. Moriarty, Clarence Weber, ''Snowy" Baker or any other boxing, swimming, wrestling or gymnastic instructor, being allowed to compete against amateurs, or even begging for that permission! He would be at once turned down as crazy. I'd like to know (asks a Sydney writer) where they practice high-diving at Honolulu, or where they can learn to excel as surf shooters. I Spent a week or two there oh different occasions, and, though I bathed every morning and afternoon, frequently smashing my shins against chunks of coral in front of the Moaua Hotel—a recognised and popular bathing resort —and along Waikiki Beach, another bathing resort, I saw no surfing worth a cent. Certainly nothing to he compared with that seen on our beaches, morning, noon and night in the summer, and the surf was a ripple alongside the breakers we get as a rule.

Surf-bathers please, note: A fine cotton Canadian bathing costume, with white braid trimming, may be obtained at the Melbourne for 3,s fid; also one-piece'-navy costumes Is lid; boys' navy costumes,"ls 3d; youths', Is Od; navy or red Vs. Sd; ladies' bathing caps. Is; ladies' all-wool Canadian costumes, 7s 6d, very smart and up-to-date.
