Duncan Browne, an engineer, was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment; Byrne (bookmaker) to seven years; and Watts (printer) to three years' imprisonment for forgery and coining. Wallace (engineer) was acquitted on the charge of forgery, but will be re-tried on one of coining. Inspector Gough gave evidence that Byrne was an Australian long-distance runner. There had been a large influx of Australian convicts to London in recent years. A CONFIDENCE MAN'S SCHEME. London, December 8. Byrne, who was recently engaged in practising the confidence trick, used to '1 "■■■!) a packet before his victim, asserting tasi it contained jewels which he was conveying to the Pope.
