Mr. Holman, in a speech at Wellington, defending the Government, said that before it left office, over 3.000.000 acres would be opened for settlement. It was the first Government not to make the interests of a single city dominate those of the State.
END OF THE SESSION. Sydney, Oecember 5. After a series of protracted sittings, occupied chiefly in dealing with the Works Bills, covering several millions, the session ended in a formal adjournment to-day. Amongst the number of measures shelved were the Income Tax, Early Closing, State Ironworks and Tenants' Improvements Bills.
THE DEFENCE QUESTION.

In the Senate, Mr. Pearce, in reply to a question, said that the Government contemplated conferring with New Zealand with reference to joint action, for naval and military defence. Informal communications mi the. subject had already been ev-hanged.
