Speaking to-d-i.v to n pr.w man, Mr. J- Poynton roi: rrcd to the newspaper paper correspondence regarding his •position, and said that he wished to remove the impression that lie had been victimised or persecuted. There had been no suggestion on his part of any such things, and the change had been made at his own request. The Minister of Finance and the Minister of Justice had met him very kindly, but the prolonged confin-mmt to office with the anxiety inseparable from the arduous and responsible work of the Treasury, had threatened a breakdown in his health. Mr. Poynton succeeds Mr. A. D. Thomson at Palmerston North, the latter having been, appointed Public Service Commissioner, and until he takes up his new dutiC6 k on January Ist will retain his present position in the Treasury. Mr Poynton practised the legal profession in Wellington from 1891 to 1895, when he was appointed Stipendary Magistrate at Invercargill, a position which he held for Ave years. He was a member of the Commission which in 1898 reorganised tne whole police force. For ten years he occupied the position of Public Irustee, and lie has also acted as Aud-itor-General during the illness, of Mr VUrburton Mr. Poynton was appointed Secretary of the Treasury and head of the Advances Board nearly three years ago.
