Governor Mease, of South Carolina, speaking at the Governors' Convention at Richmond, Virginia, defended lynching when black brutes attacked white women. It was only necessary to get the right man, and then those concerned need not receive a trial. Governor 151 case said that he would never order the State militia to shoot lynchers. Other governors attacked Governor Mease's attitude.
