A DRILL HALL "SCENE."

OFFICER'S POSITION. Masterton, December 1. Lieutenant Purdy, of the Permanent Territorial Staff, explains that the young officer whose promotion was said to have had something to do with last Friday's "incident" at the Masterton Drill Hall is only a second lieutenant. His name appeared on the district orders for promotion to first lieutenant in error. Ho is not required to pass an examination for a second lieutenancy. Lieutenant Purdy also states that social standing is not regarded in the matter of promotion. An inquiry is to be held into the affair and the local papers are insisting that this should be open to the press.
