In consequence of the prosperity of the shipping trade, the Shipping Federation lias decided substantially to increase wages from January 1. Considerable difficulty is experienced in securing weavers to meet the demands of the cotton boom. Many old women, who retired twenty years ago, are being requisitioned to keep the looms going.
