LAW v. NEW PLYMOUTH. Contrary to expectations, New Plymouth were easily defeated by Law. They batted first, and it was not very long before fhey were all out for 45 runs. The wicket was very fast, and the bowling, especially that of Lash, very good, being fast and low. Lash captured the wickets of the first three men the mainstay of the team to bat—in each case, just after they had ventured into double figures, and this seemed to take the heart out of the remainder, who, between them, contributed only 10 runs. It was a sad procession, There were no extras. Lash and Elliot did all the bowling. Law went to the wickets with a smiling prospect, but the bowling was not to be treated lightly, and runs did not come very freely at the star. Lash and Bewley opened, but the partnership was early broken up, Bewley throwing his wicket away through being run out. Greatbatch went in at the fall of the first wicket, .and he and Lash then made Law's only stand. Even ;then the}' had a certain amount of luck, Lash being dropped in the slips by Williams early in his career, and, thanks to Harding, his partner had at least two lives on the ■boundary. Greatbatch was cleanbowled by Gwillim shortly after he had passed his half-century, while Lash retired for 60. Johnson (10) was the only other member of file team to make double figures, nine men knocking up 28 runs. Extras contributed 18. New Plymouth had a second innings, the > tail, with the assistance of Williams ; and Stohr, being given first strike. In a like manner, Law gave some of their lesser lights a turn with the ball. Gwillim and_ O'Connell did not wait to bat, and the innings, which was not taken very seriously, was productive of 68 runs. Law thus won by an innings and 51 runs.
