According to the annual navigation and shipping returns of the United Kingdom, issued recently, there are no less than 840 sailing ships and 50 steamships flying the British flag which have been engaged in our mercantile service for fifty or more years. Early Victorian relics of the days of hemp and canvas number 285, with four of the earliest steamships that ploughed the ocean.
