SWIMMING.
Thanks to the energies 'of the newlyelected secretary (Mr. O. Tabor) and the new committee, the New Plymouth Swimming Club is being resuscitated into a really live body. Already the club has increased its membership from a very small nlimber to close- on 60, with the prospect of still further additions. With a view to going in for a more ambitious opening day, the committee has postponed this function until Thursday,, January 2. It will, subject to the consent of the Eukekura Park Board, take place on the lake in the Recreation Grounds, and will probably take the form of a monster water carnival, with boating on the lake, and other aquaiic and natatorial events, be'sideS the ordinary run of swimming races. The project is being taken up very enthusiastically, and the whole affair' should form an excellent holiday attraction for townspeople and people from the country. Incidentally, it should servo to put the club's finances on a stronger basis. The committee has also in mind tlie still further popularising of the municipal baths, and to this end a series q£ evening swimming meetings will be held from time to time, as goon as the season .has been' officially opened. It also contemplates activities in other directions. Indeed, hope is at last beginning to dawn on the horizon of the local swimming faternity, and it should not be long before New Plymouth, what with its baths and magnificent stretch of open beach, should become one of the strongest swimming and bathing centres in the Dominion. Till now its great natural advantages have, to a large extent, not been taken advantage of, and the career of the revivified club will therefore, doubtless, be watched with interest.
