BANK OF NEW ZEALAND.
MR. BEAUCHAMP'S APPOINTMENT.
Why should the Massey Government; go out of its way to appoint Mr. Harold Beauchamp to the directorate of tlie Bank of New Zealand? Tiiis is a riddle which a good many people in commercial circles will probably be attempting to find an answer to (says the Wellington Dominion, the Government's organ). Mr. Beauchamp was appointed to the directorate of the bank some years ago by the Continuous Ministry, and became chairman of directors; but the Continuous Ministry during the regime failed to reappoint him, Sir Joseph Ward making excuses for the omission which plainly would not hold water. Now, with a temporary vacancy to fill, the Massey Government comes to the rescue of Mr. Beauchamp and replaces him on the board. ' Apparently Mr. Beauchamp finds it difficult to escape observation when Governments are looking for bank directors. It is a funny business. Probably the solution to the puzzle is to be found in the fact that the chairman of the board of directors, Mr. Martin Kennedy, is about to visit England, and an actingchairman will be wanted during his absence. Mr. Beauchamp having filled the chairmanship for more than one term, should 'bo familiar with the duties, and could without embarrassment step into the breach when the vacancy occurs. This sounds rather lame, and is also somewhat' severe on the other members of the board, but it is the best guess we can make to explain the situation.
