Stratford Show

A GREAT SUCCESS.

The third annual Show of the Stratford A .and P .Association opened j'esteiday under disadvantageous condition*. The continuous rain of Monday and Tuesday had made the grounds very soft in the vicinity of Lh<; .Show pens, and it would have fared very badly with the Association had the arrangements not bee,n well ahead. As it was, the judge.? got to work early, and prize tickets soon appeared in the various sections. . The I show ring itself was in perfect order, a, tribute to the efficiency of the underground pipe drains. The day was a busy one for the .officials, who carried out their work in businesslike style. Th« secrvfaiy. always approachable, knew his businet-H, and .Mr. Fear on deserves every praise for the management of his first show. The luncheon arrangements this year are under Use direct control of the Association, Mr*;. Brooking doing the catering in first-class style. The rain held off durng the morning, but a "Scotch mist" 'made things unpleasant during the early part of the afternoon, j The Stratford Municipal Brass Band, under Bandmaster Marshall, played a good programme of capital music, and will be on the ground again to-day. The light horses and harness horses are the strongest features of the horse section, and the hunters' and other competitions have drawn record entries. The horses are more numerous than at Ilawera, and there is some "hot stud'" showing. Cattle include some magnificent specimens of Hie various breeds. )

CATTLE. There was a very good entry of cattie* although the wet weather previously probably prevented a number of shippers at a distance from the, line from sending tb_eir cattle forward. As usual in North Taranaki Jerseys and Ayrshlres ;iredominated, the former perhaps being the_ stronger class. • Competition was again very keen. The ei'iampion cow was in Jerseys. Bilbnry X., which was purchased by Messrs. A. and J. O'Donncl, of Inaha, at the Hawera Show for 200 gns. The New Zealand champion, Miro, was not a competitor. Mr. W. M. Bayley's Ruth IT. was reserve champion. In the bulls. W. V. Earkness' Eozels' Sultan repeated his Hawera performance, O'Donnell's Eainbow being reserve. In Ayrshires Fair Maid of Tnglewood. owned by C. 'Karsten, of Waikanae, was again adjudged champion, Jas. Kyle's Jeanie of Glengariff being reserve, whilst in bulls' J. Kyle provided the champion, and W. Hall (Lepperton) the reserve. Pedigree Holstcins were not numerically strong, but were pretty solid in quality, both Newton King and W. I, Lovelock, of Palmerston North, being competitors. Honors were divided, the former showing the champion bull and reserve champion cow, and the latter the champion cow and reserve bull. G. A. Turner, Eltham, was again the only exhibitor in Shorthorns, J. Forbes in Herefords, and W. Birdling in fat cattle. The grade or crossbred section for dairy purposes produced great competition, there bein" good entries in all classes. Eesults:— PEDIGEEE JERSEY.

DAIRY PRODUCE. As at Hawera there was very little competition in the butter and cheese competitions open to dairy factories.
