The friends of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Smith.paid them a surprise visit .it Mr. W. R. Wright's residence on the eve of their departure for -Auckland to wish them good-bye, and presented Mr. Smith with a gold-mounted walking stick'and Mrs. Smith with a travelling rug. > : The Wesleyan Church held their annual services last Sunday, and they were well attended. The funeral of the late Mr, W. Jefferics left hi.? son's residence on the Manihi Road on Sunday, 23rd iiist.i and was followed by a large number of friends to the Opunake Cemetery, the bearers being Messrs. W. R. Wright, ,T;: Young, A. Lusk, R. Malcolm, A. Chapman, and V. Tyrrell, all of whom knew him well iu his younger days. The friends of Mr. R. Morrow will be sorry to know he is at present indisposed.
The Bank of New Zealand has opened a branch atßahotu, and it should prove a great\ benefit to the district.
Mr. Prosser. of Wellington, has opened a jeweller's shop in the to>vnship. and seems to he doing a good trade.; The local dairy factory is now receiving 37,000 His of'milk daily, and.has just about reached its height in milk, hut the same cannot he said of the tests which are very low. .Milk suppliers wilt not lie pleased to know that cheese on open consignment is only netting about Od per lb, while the outlook is anything but promising. The Parihaka Road Board has' decided to open up the Gregory Road.' When it is done it will he a boon to settlers and cattle drovers attending the ' sales with stock, and also to the Inspector of Noxious Weeds, when he happens to visit the' district, for blackberries and gorse seem to thrive splendidly all along the 'road.
