EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Education Board met yesterday, the chairman (Mr. H. Trimble) presiding. Other members ■present were Messrs. W. L. Ivjau.-sdy, A. Morton, A. H. lialcombe, W. liogers, A. M. Bradbury, It. Masters, J. Young, and G. A. Adlam. THE TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

In a letter to the Board, Mr. F. P. C'orkill, Chairman of the New Plymouth Technical College Advisory Committee, stated that, at .a-meeting, of the committee'on the 18th hist, there had been a lengthy discussion as to the future conduct of the institution, and a general -desire was expressed to co-operate more heartily with the Board than had been possible in the .past. The members of the; committee were impressed with the practical (not visionary) methods of the new director and believed that under better conditions he would be able to make, a much greater success of the, college that it had hitherto attained.. With ,the object of thoroughly considering the best J course to pursue., the committee suggested that the Board should appoint three of its members to meet a like numbed of the committee, and to devote an evening at an early date to the discussion of a policy and syllabus for next year. The committee, continued the letter, considered no time should be lost in formulating a scheme and making all needful arrangements for a start on more complete lines. The committee would also like fo be furnished with a statement of the receipts and disbursements of the New Plymouth Technical College, as at present it had no information on the subject.—The Board approved of the suggested conference, and appointed the chairman (Mr. IT. Trimble) and Messrs. Morton and Bradbury, to the committee to meet the College authorities. The statement of-receipts and expenditure has been already compiled, but is being audited by the Government auditor.

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. The chairman reported that during the interim he had made the following temporary appointments:—Mrs. E. Geddes. head teacher, Okato; Miss X. Butler, assistant, Toko; Miss I. Bartlett, sole teacher, Upper Mangorei; Mrs. I. West, assistant, Tikorangi; Miss 11. Drader, assistant, Tuna; Mi; J. Vale, sole teacher, Musker's; Mrs. A. Wilkes, assistant, Frankley; Miss F. I. Meyer, sole teacher, Kent; and Miss R. Eason, assistant, Tariki. When the truancy cases at Rahoim came out again this month at Opunake, the magistrate decided that a conviction must be recorded, leaving the parents to take other action.if they thought fitReceived.

GENERAL. | The proposal of the Board to change the name of the Ackland School to Tepop,o meets with the approval of the Ackland School- Committee, who, in a letter to the Board, referred to the suggestion as an excellent idea, and trusted that the Board would make the change. Recommendations,'which were submitted "by the Inspectors, regarding transfers and appointments were read in committee, and received and adopted. . A report by the Chairman on the Durham School horse padoock was received, and the matter left in his hands with power to act. Messrs. F. Von. Lnbbe and Co.'s offer to lend a piano at the nominal cost of cartage and insurance for the use of the ] proposed Glee Club at the Technical Col-1 lege, was accepted with thanks. The Department wrote enclosing authority for a grant of £iiO for the" purchase of Musker's School building. Intimation was received from Mr. S. Percy-Smith (Chairman of the Polynesian .Society) that .a.deputation consisting of Messrs. Roy, Fraser and himself, would wait on the Board at its December meeting, seeking permission to erect a permanent, building on Poverty Flat, near the Technical College. Mrs. Charles Lowe's application for a lease of the school site in B XVI., Pouatu, S.D., was referred to Mr. Ke'nnedy to report on. Written i exnlana tions were received | from three Waitara assistants who had failed to report themselves on the reopening of the school, and after consideration the Board decided that the reasons were satisfactory. Objection was lodged by Mrs. Moss, teacher at Tarurutangi, to her transfer to Te Kiri, and after discussing'the matter, it was decided not to insist on the transfer. OVERSEER'S REPORT. 1 In his monthly report the building overseer (Mr. C. IT. Moore) stated that lie had made small repairs at Kaimata and Tarata. The wash-house, bath-room and scullery at the Warea residenee had 1 been completed and repairs ell'ectcd at the school. During the holidays he intended painting the. residence there as it : had. never been painted. The new school at Iliaia had ,been finished and the section was being fenced. A start had been made with the new s«hool at Oeo. As instructed lie had paid a visit of inspection to Opunake, and recommended that minor repairs be effected as soon as the Oeo contract was completed. The whole of the outside of the Mangamalnime School and residence, and the inside of the kitchen, bath-room and scullery had been painted, and he .proposed improving the sanitary conveniences and reerecting the tank. As instructed, he had visited the Tataraimaka School and recommended the painting of the inside of the residence and walls of the school and the erecting of two special ventilating pivots there. ,The painting at Toko" was finished, the laying of extra piping, and taps at Stratford had been attended to, and a curtain screen sent to Egmont Village. He proposed attending to necessary alterations at Oaonui wliile down the coast. Accounts amounting to £3200 were passed for payment.
