The first of the Banner matches was played on Thursday, whim Xew Plymouth, defeated Stratford. Four rinks from each club participated, the threes highest:.scores counting for the banner.] Next Thursday will see the commence- ( ment proper of the competition! Fit/,- | roy are drawn to play West End, at I Fitzr'oy,■ and Waitara will meet Ingle-; wood at Waitara. The Xew> Plymouth Club agreed to play Stratford a week earlier than provided for in the fixtures, on account of the Stratford show next week. It is probable the former club will play a friendly match amongst its own members next Thursday. Neither the Fitzroy nor the West End clubs have commenced their club competitions yet. All the local greens are in good order. ''Burnt Wood" writes: —"Tn reading •your notfes on bowling in last Saturday's issue and your remarks on the decision of the ITaranaki Association that the scores of:'the three highest rinks to count in the Banner competition matches. I notice that you are under a- misapprehension with regard to the manner of deciding the matches last- year. Tn flaming the'regulations for the Banner com-i petition, in order to' meet the circumstances: of the smaller clubs, the delegates decided that every club must play at least three rinks. That in some matches only three rinks counted for the Baiiher was an innovation on the 5 part of;.ihe individual clubs, who. rightly or wrohgly, thought that they would stand more chance of winning with their best rinks than with the scores of the whole of the rinks engaged in play counting. This led to dissatisfaction 011 the part of those players whose games flid not count, hut the management, of the clubs have only themselves to blame for this. The decision arrived at by the delegates this year i, certainly a : retrograde one —low scores are the result of good bowling, while the high scores are more oflen than not the outcome of lucky and indifferent play. It would have been better if the. Association had rultfd that the scores oi all rinks engaged should count. That would have satisfied all the players. imhl theri? would have been more nrob-bilitv of the. best club coming out on top-• v.-'iich T presume are two of the object,-, oi :,ie competition."
