Allegory, who was purchased in Christchurch on behalf of Mr. J. McLaughlin, has arrived safely at Hastings. It is stated that Continuance is under offer to a South 'Stralian sportsman for 400 guineas. The crack steeplechaser cheap at that figure. Thompson, of Christchurch. has been appointed starter, vice Mr. Budge resigned, for the Taranaki Jockey Club's Christmas meeting. Mr. Thompson filled a similar capacity at the Stratford meeting last January and hip starting was excellent. In an effort to cut down an advertisement in a down-the-line paper a Taring club's secretary notifies that ''Description, age, pedigree and name of trainer must accompany nominations." Tt is to be hoped that trainers won't object!
With the object of encouraging owners in Great Britain to keep horses suitable for artillery purposes, the War Office is forming a special horse reserve, and will P n v owners an annual subsidy of £4 per horse. Danny Maher's riding contracts for next year remain the same as for this. Lord Rosebery will hold the first and only claim on him. Sir R. Jardine has renewed for 1913 the retainer he has given William Griggs for the last few year-. Whalley was recently approached with an offer of a three rears' retainer to ride for a powerful stable, but declined, ami has agreed to ride for Mr. Leopold de Rothschild again next year. Full Rate and Sir Ivnox are in aetivc work at Opaki. The last named is reported to be very well and may run forward at the Feilding meeting next week.
